Welcome Aboard!

Here’s the deal: At age 18, I had it all mapped out. Marine Corps Infantry, then officer, then pilot. My plan was to retire from the military by age 40 with a chest full of medals and wrapped in the American Flag. None of that happened. Life is messy. Plans collapse. You end up an engineer doing tech sales for a Silicon Valley company and wondering how you got here.
I’m 54 now. I’ve worked for great leaders and absolute clowns. I’ve made every leadership mistake there is, mostly while wearing Sergeant stripes trying to lead guys who deserved better.
I started seeing a therapist in my 50s for childhood stuff I should’ve dealt with at age 25. I’m a Christian and I’ll say that out loud, but I’m not here to preach at you. I’m still figuring this out.
The Cluttered Path is for the guy I was at 28… hungry, ambitious, decent income, no idea what he was doing, and nobody to ask. If that’s you, welcome. We’re going to talk about careers (especially in tech and sales), money, leadership, mental health, friendship, faith, and the things men don’t talk about often enough. No grift. No bro-cult. Just one guy on a cluttered path sharing what he’s learned, and what he’s still learning.

I planned my whole life out when I was 18 and NONE of it happened the way I drew it up. I’m 54 now: Former Marine Sergeant, engineer, tech sales guy, husband, dad, still in therapy, still working a corporate job, and still figuring this out. The Cluttered Path is the conversation I wish someone had with me at age 28. Career advice that isn’t LinkedIn nonsense. Money talk without the crypto bros. Mental health without the eye-rolling. Faith without self-righteousness. Leadership lessons from a guy who’s made ALL the mistakes so you don’t have to. If your dad wasn’t around, wasn’t the talking type, or just couldn’t relate to the world you live in, pull up a chair.
Retirement isn’t the reward most men think it is. It’s an identity crisis waiting to happen.
In this episode, we sit down with Michael Kay, who has made it his mission to help men transition out of “work life” without losing themselves in the process.
Because here’s the uncomfortable truth: Most men don’t struggle with retirement because of money… They struggle because they don’t know who they are without being needed.
We get into:
- Why successful men have the hardest time letting go
- The hidden psychological cost of staying in the game too long
- What actually happens after the career ends (that no one talks about)
- How to prepare mentally and emotionally for life after work
- Practical ways to build purpose before you retire, not after
If you’re within 5–10 years of retirement, or even thinking about it, this conversation might save you from making the same mistake most men do: waiting too long to figure out who you are outside of your job.
